Shared Living matches Missourians with intellectual and developmental disabilities with a caring host family, couple, or companion. Individuals share everyday life at home, get support built around them, and belong in their community.
Missouri Shared Living can happen in a caregiver’s home or in the individual’s own home.
In the host's home
Host Home Services
The individual moves in with a host family, couple, or single adult and becomes part of their household: shared meals, holidays, routines, and friendships.
Private bedroom, unless the individual chooses to share
Lease or written residency agreement for the individual
Host provides transportation to appointments, activities, and work
Alora completes a full Host Home Study before any match
In the individual's home
Companion Services
A trained companion moves into the individual’s own home or apartment and supports them to live there and take part in community life.
The home stays in the individual's or guardian's name
Separate bedrooms, with household costs split in half
If a companion leaves, the individual keeps their home
Alora completes a Companion Evaluation before any match
What's included
One service, everyday support.
Skill development
Building independence at home, like cooking, budgeting, and managing routines, and keeping the skills a person already has.
Personal Assistance
Help with daily living, personal care, and health routines, given with dignity by someone who knows the person well.
Community connection
Neighbors, faith communities, clubs, and friendships. Life happens in the community, not only inside the house.
Transportation
Rides to appointments, activities, and work listed in the PCSP are included in the Shared Living rate.
Hospital supports
If the PCSP calls for it, a familiar person can help with communication and supervision during a hospital stay.
Medication oversight
Alora sets up a medication tracking system for every home and trains providers to use it, so doses are given and recorded correctly.
How matching works
A good match takes time. We don't rush it.
We look at lifestyle, values, routines, pets, children, smoking, accessibility, and how close the home is to the people and places that matter.
1
Referral & getting to know you
Your support coordinator refers you to Alora. We learn about your preferences, support needs, and what home means to you.
2
Meet possible matches
We introduce approved hosts or companions. You, your family, and your planning team visit and ask questions until the fit feels right.
3
Prepare the home
Before anyone moves, the provider finishes training, the home passes inspection, the budget is signed, and a transition plan is in place.
4
Settle in & keep growing
Alora visits at least monthly, reviews progress on PCSP outcomes, and stays on call for the household.
Our commitments
What every Shared Living home can count on.
Shared Living is built on lasting relationships. Our job is to protect those relationships with careful matching and steady support.
Choice
the individual and guardian choose the match and can change it
Monthly
documented home visits and progress reviews at a minimum
Backup
relief support, consultation, and emergency backup for every provider
Become a Shared Living Provider
Open your home, change a life, including your own.
Host Home Providers and Companions are everyday Missourians who want to share their lives with someone. Parents, legal guardians, and spouses of the individual cannot serve as their provider.
Home visits, interviews, and at least three character references.
Background screening
Family Care Safety Registry checks for you and every household member 18 or older.
Training before the move
Abuse and neglect prevention, CPR and First Aid, medication administration if needed, person-centered planning, and the individual’s PCSP.
A safe, inspected home
Smoke and CO detectors, insurance, and a reliable, insured vehicle for Host Homes.
